Web 2.0

Do you think that in this self-broadcasting culture of ours with Facebook, Friendster, MySpaceWhat and the many other similar sites that our values and creativity are threatened?
These sites seem to perpetuate a freewheeling, narcissistic atmosphere where people are led to believe what they see and read online before they believe what is on the news or in the newspapers?
Now with music sharing, and movies being pirated digital content is no longer sacred. It is amazing to see these big box retailers realigning their product offerings because CDs and Videos are marked down to buy 1 get 1 FREE. What's next, bookstores?

Your thoughts are welcome~

It's an interesting perspective...I've never thought of social media fostering a culture of narcissism, but I can see where you might perceive it that way. Blogs give a new voice to people who, in generations past, might have stood on milkcrates on busy street corners. I really see it as a positive thing - particularly as a marketing professional. It's a good way to get the street-level view of what people think about different products, candidates, headlines, etc.

As for pirating...I don't think it's ever acceptable. I think it sucks, frankly.

One thought I have on music licensing: I think once you've purchased the music, you should have a license to own (tho' maybe not to share) that music. So if I own the Sex Pistols' Bollocks album on vinyl, I should be able to download it either for free or at a steep discount, since I've already purchased that content once. It bugs me that I have to keep purchasing the same content on various media -- vinyl, cassette, CD, mp3 -- as the media players become obsolete.

What are your thoughts on this?

I think it is the other way around. My longer answer to this question If you are talking about people priating copywrited data yeah, I think intellectual property is somewhat threatened. But people like what they like. People should be working to help other people. When you write a song you are contributing to the collective cognitive culture. If people like your song they will play it. Other people will here it pirated or not. Someone will eventually buy the CD. It's free playtime just like the radio. That's just one way to look at it. I just cruising this group right now. I can chat more later.

Thanks,

Buck
