Coaching Resource Review

The "Life Coaches Marketing Maven", Victory Darwin, has created yet another leading edge web 2.0 social network. This one is called www.BIGLIFE.ws, a "Lifestyles Upgrading and Self Improvement" destination site. While it may look like good educational content and entertaining blogs to the average passerby seeking personal development insights, a quick peek behind the curtain reveals the true workings of the machine.

It is actually a strategically engineered social network and advertising co-op for life coaches, business coaches, personal coaches, wealth coaches, success coaches, law of attraction coaches and seminar speakers. Coaches pool their funds to buy large volumes of advertising at bulk prices and split the cost so each member only pays a few dollars.

In fact, members don't even pay for leads, those are free, members only pay when they get clients. They pay a small percentage of the sale (a donation to the site done on the honor system) and that money goes back into the advertising budget to create a perpetual cycle lead generation machine.

Several coaches who declined to be named said that BigLife.ws is a long awaited and welcome resource for struggling life coaches in need of marketing help since the uber successful coaches directory, Coaching 24/7 ( www.247coaching.com ) proved to be a poor investment, providing few quality leads to the life coaches who paid several hundred dollars for a directory listing.

"BigLife.ws is what we've needed all along", said Anne, a part time life coach, "they don't just teach marketing, they actually do it for you and just get you the leads. I never wanted to be a marketer, just a coach, now I can be."

BigLife.ws founder, Victory Darwin said he created the site as his legacy project. "It's no big deal really, I just have always wanted to change the world, and now I'm doing it. Actually it's the life coaches who do all the work, I just provide them with free leads, and take all the credit. Seriously though, my own personal coach, Eric P. Landry is the reason I'm successful today, and I just wanted to give something back to this valuable profession.

BigLife.ws is in beta currently and accepting limited membership. "February is our prelaunch. There is free membership for coaches I like. They've got to be the right fit for the site. Our ad budget to kick off March 1 is over $10,000. This is going to be a big deal."

To Darwin's surprise, the site has so far attracted over 150 coaches, the majority not being beginners and part timers. "Surprisingly most coaches are well established, successful life coaches and business coaches. Some have best selling books, industry recognized branded programs, or been in the biz for 20+ years. Apparently even they have been struggling with lead generation."

To register for free during February, a personal invitation is required, though this reporter expects any coach who an impressive profile who manages to reach Darwin would be greeted with open arms.

For those of you who don't eat, breathe, and sleep web standards, OpenSocial is a new open web API being spearheaded by Google and joined by a wide range of partners including us, Google's own Orkut, LinkedIn, Hi5, Friendster, Salesforce.com, Oracle, iLike, Flixster, RockYou, and Slide.

The old Success mag back in early 90's (pre MLM crap days) made it fun to go to the mailbox, hoping my monthly issue would be there. Especially the annual GREAT COMEBACKS and RENEGADES issues.

For most readers of Business 2.0, it was their single favorite mag by far (as you can see in all the stories below)

The B2 editor tried to buy it back from Time. Time preferred it dead. A Techcrunch merger was considered. No doubt many people in Silicon Valley right now are brainstorming ways to make something of this.

I love to get away from the computer with a paper magazine. I'm not sure it would have the success as just a blog. But is there a web 2.0 solution?

How about a multi-media publication, or a TV show like on Joost.

You can imagine how often I hear that. Or even worse, people just assume I don't know how to spell, and correct it for me... "Victor". Well, it really is Victory, or if you prefer, just V for short, not Vic ! So, why'd my parents name me Victory? Well, actually they didn't.

My Grandfather did, but he was the only one who used it. My father named me after the world champion motocross racer of his day, since he was a dirtbike champ himself, and I guess hoped I would be one day too. The one motocross race I entered was on a old 500cc Sonic, while I was just 11yo and weighed about 85 pounds. That would be like strapping a rollerblades and a jetpack on your kid, then sending him down a gravel road. Needless to say, I crashed enormously and more than one, and came in dead last. For my 16th birthday my dad paid for half of an '82 GPz 750, the Eddie Lawson replica.

That was good for a few years of terrorizing the city, until one day the cops had enough and laid out a spike belt for me. In short, bikes are very agile, and 1992 Mustang Interceptors are apparently not.

The pursuing cop drove the car straight through a concrete light pole and blew it up, Hollywood style explosion and a fire that burned it to a skeletal remains with smoking rubber (he lived). They had only just bought the car 2 days previous, so they had a lot of explaining to do in the media. The court ordered them to return my bike, but they had the last laugh. I went to pick it up, and it had been disassembled and thrown into a big box. They said they were searching it for drugs.

oh yeah... my name... so I finally got to meet my Grandfather, in Detroit, just before he died, and he told me some old war stories of fighting in the Polish Underground (Polish Secret State),

and escaping to America when his wife became pregnant. My dad was born in the USA shortly after, with the last name Darwin, which my Grandfather had just pulled from the phonebook, assuming it was a common American name. My father was an active pacifist, and when he was drafted for the Vietnam war, he took his pregnant wife across the border to Canada, along with about a hundred others who he taught his border jumping plan to.

So then, I was born in Canada, and my grandfather suggested the name Victory. My dad vetoed it based on the war reference but from my perspective, both their lives were totally parallel where it really counted. They both took action to protect their families, both escaping a country at war with their pregnant wives.

35 years later I became a student of Trump Universities "entrepreneurship mastery program". I had great expectations and so was greatly disappointed when it turned out to be a very poor quality program. It came to a head when during the Q&A on the "branding" chapter the Dean suggested that when you start a business you have to get your logo right the first time because you don't want to change it later and weaken your brand. He said you should pay $3,000 to get a quality logo made.

I told him that I had bootstrapped my way to $2million+ in 3 different businesses, and the advice I would give a startup entrepreneur is to spend his money marketing to test his core concept first. You can get logos for $99 on the web, that will do just fine.

I realized in that moment that the big difference between the meaning of TRUMP and VICTORY. Trump means you just crush the competition because you always have the better hand or more money. Victory means you are the underdog. You may be broke, and you may be in for a hell of a struggle, but you will persevere and learn what you need to learn, and find a way to triumph in the end.

I thought I could create a better entrepreneurship program than Trump's and I'd teach how to start a business from nothing, using my bootstrapping methods. The number one thing I learned from Trump about branding is your name brand should be your name, so I called it University Of Victory. And the number two thing I learned was that your reputation and your name was gold, and that's why Trump's logo was made of gold... and now so was mine!

I told my dad about my new connection with the word victory, and I made it my legal middle name. He said it also worked well for him, because he hadn't yet got me a birthday present, and he happened to have a leather jacket in my size still on the rack. He owned the most popular motorcycle shop in town and was the dealer for the made in USA, Victory motorcycles.

So that's the story of my name. What's happened since? University Of Victory has since become World Vision Entrepreneur. It's a similar concept but even more in line with my original purpose. It's taken off on it's own without any marketing effort.

Amazing how that works when you get yourself in line with the universe, eh! ~V

The ships aren't as big, but we do have cool harbor planes that take off from and land on the water, flying from downtown Vancouver to downtown Victoria, every half hour in the summer. How much more could you earn if you were perceived as an EXPERT / AUTHORITY?

If you are great but unknown in your industry, and you make $5,000/mo now, how much do you think you could earn if you were seen as an expert or authority?

I have some solid second hand info about a couple experts from "The Secret". One was earning about $2,000 per speaking engagement before, and that multiplied 10x to $20,000 after! The other was earning about $100-$150/hour before and jumped to $1,000/hour after with a waiting list, and ultimately hiring junior consultants to do the work.

What would it take to create that image/perception of you?

1) marketing/self promotion/branding?
2) more specialized training?
3) certification?
4) client testimonials?
5) endorsement from recognized expert?

I would like to hear some debate on this.

I may have a unique opportunity coming up, which could achieve that 5-10x multiple. It would only be for about 2 or 3 people and it would have to be a perfect fit, or it just won't work.
